Another week, another tasting menu at the Dock Kitchen… sigh.
I have wanted to go for the truffle menu in the past few years, but I’ve never been around for it. This year, I was. I headed over with my friends Ali and Alice for a chilled out Friday dinner of five truffle courses. Right.
We started with a piece of fried bread topped in fontina cheese, with truffles shaved over it. The fontina was perfectly sharp and wonderful with the truffles.
Next, the mashed potatoes with truffle. Mmmmm.
Then, steak with a truffle butter and a side of charred cauliflower. At first, we were upset that the truffle butter was butter instead of shavings, but it was so rich and melted perfectly on the steak, that it worked really well.
Then, the cheese dish, which may have been my favourite. Cheese with truffle shavings and flat bread. I’m glad that they didn’t give us real bread, at this point, we were starting to feel very full… The cheese was very creamy and not too strong – a perfect compliment to the truffles.

Finally, for dessert, we were served poached pears with melted chocolate and a hazelnut brittle. We shared two dishes between the three of us and still couldn’t finish!
So, would I recommend the menu? At first, I was disappointed to not have some more typical truffle-paired dishes, such as scrambled eggs or pasta, but it was fun to step out of the norm and try some different dishes instead… I’m not sure I’d come back in the next few weeks, but the meal was good enough on a standalone basis, and the earthy truffles just added to it!
